Gachagua Alleges Two Police Officers Were Hired to Assassinate Him, Kalonzo and Matiang’i During Kikuyu Rally

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has made explosive allegations, claiming that two police officers attached to Kikuyu Police Station were hired to assassinate him, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i during a political rally held earlier this year.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 5, at his Wamunyoro residence during a meeting with leaders from Murang’a County, the former deputy president alleged that the officers had been paid to execute the alleged plot but did not provide evidence to support the claims.

According to Gachagua, the information was relayed to him by officers serving at the same police station.

He claimed the alleged assassination plan targeted the three opposition leaders during a political gathering in Kikuyu, where tensions had reportedly escalated.

“The day we were attacked in Kikuyu, those two police officers from Kikuyu Police Station had allegedly been paid to eliminate me, Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i,” Gachagua claimed while addressing the gathering.

The DCP leader further alleged that the same officers were connected to other serious criminal incidents, including the deaths of two individuals whom he identified by name.

He suggested that the officers had been involved in multiple unlawful operations, although he did not present documentary evidence or official investigative findings to substantiate the allegations.

Gachagua also accused the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin, of failing to take action despite what he described as repeated efforts to have the officers investigated.

According to the former deputy president, the officers have continued to evade scrutiny because they are allegedly being shielded from investigations.

He claimed that complaints regarding the matter had not received the attention they deserved, raising concerns about accountability within law enforcement agencies.

The allegations mark the latest escalation in the increasingly tense political exchanges between Gachagua and the Kenya Kwanza administration following his departure from government.

In recent months, the former deputy president has repeatedly accused senior state officials of orchestrating political intimidation against opposition leaders. Government officials have consistently rejected those claims, maintaining that state institutions operate independently and within the law.

The latest remarks are also likely to intensify debate over the security of opposition politicians as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue to gather momentum.

Neither the National Police Service nor the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had publicly responded to Gachagua’s allegations at the time of his remarks. Similarly, President William Ruto’s administration had not issued an official statement addressing the claims.

Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i, both of whom were named by Gachagua as alleged targets in the purported plot, had also not publicly commented on the allegations by the time the claims attracted national attention.

The accusations come amid heightened political activity across the country, with opposition leaders holding rallies and consultations as they position themselves ahead of the next general election.
